Local Government Minister and BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir commented that people are being misled about constitutional reform and the July Charter. At the same time, he described Jamaat-e-Islami’s current activities as an attempt to destabilize the country.

He made these remarks while speaking as the chief guest at a memorial service for Dr. Md. Abdul Quddus at Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University on Saturday (May 2) afternoon.

Mirza Fakhrul stated that BNP never agreed to the decision that elected representatives would form a constitutional reform council. They are misleading the public. Jamaat is agitating to destabilize the country once again.

Expressing concern over the moral decay of the country due to the past 15 years of rule, Mirza Fakhrul said, ‘The society left behind by the fascists has completely deviated from ethics. The deeper we delve into the government, the more alarmed we become. Rectifying the broken system, marked by widespread lobbying over the last 15 years, is a major challenge.’

He mentioned that the country is now burdened with 80 trillion Taka in debt, and everyone must work together to overcome this crisis.

Regarding the July Charter, the BNP Secretary General said, ‘We were present when this charter was formed. At that time, it was stated that everything would be based on consensus, otherwise, we would discard it. But now they are saying the entire charter must be implemented.’

He further informed that the opposition party has been asked to join the constitutional amendment committee on the last day of parliament, and they are expected to announce their decision soon.

Citing the example of former President Ziaur Rahman’s integrity, he lamented, ‘Good work cannot be done without honesty. Currently, even in the construction of mosques and temples in Bangladesh, the most corruption occurs.’ He urged for increased cultivation of merit to compete in the global context.

Prime Minister’s Political Advisor Ruhul Kabir Rizvi was present as a special guest at the memorial service. University teachers and party activists from various levels also participated in the meeting.
