Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury believes that democracy must prevail in the economy alongside politics. He stated that political democracy alone is not enough; there must also be democracy in the economy. The government is prioritizing the democratization of the economy.

He made these remarks on Sunday (May 10) at the inauguration ceremony of the second phase of ‘RAISE’, a joint project by PKSF and the World Bank aimed at developing the informal sector, held in Agargaon, Dhaka.

The Finance Minister said, “We want to bring those who are outside the mainstream economy into its fold. This is everyone’s right as a citizen. Democracy must not only exist in politics but also in the economy.”

Amir Khosru stated, “In the past, an oligarchic class (the extremely wealthy) benefited from the country’s economy, in which ordinary people had no participation. The government is breaking this trend.”

The minister further added, “Women nurture the entire family and know well how to save. For this reason, the government is trying to provide them with some financial relief through family cards. This fund will play a significant role in the rural economy and create a flow of money in the local economy.”
